Stony Brook

Long Island Sound hamlet with old mills, carriage collections, village shops, and marshy shoreline.

Stony Brook is a north-shore Long Island hamlet with two personalities. The university sits inland by the railway station, while the older village centre stays closer to the harbour, with a grist mill, pond, old-fashioned shops, and a surprising amount of open green space.

For travellers, the best day is compact but varied. Start around the harbour and Stony Brook Grist Mill, walk the trails at Avalon Nature Preserve, then spend time with carriages and American art at the Long Island Museum.

Stony Brook is not a beach resort and it is not trying to be one. Its charm is more particular: a well-kept village edge, marsh and sound views at West Meadow Beach, and enough history to make a one-day stop feel like more than another Long Island suburb.
