Sherwood Inn

1807 stagecoach inn overlooking the lake — restaurant, bar and rooms

The Sherwood Inn dominates the corner of West Genesee Street with its long verandah, slate roof and weathered shingle sign. Inside there are 25 rooms, a formal dining room overlooking the lake, and a friendly tavern in the basement with a long wooden bar and Wednesday-night jazz.

The tavern menu has French onion soup, lake-fish dishes and a solid burger; the dining room is more ambitious — duck breast, lamb, occasional game. The waterfront tables fill up first; reserve in advance for weekend nights.

A story
The Sherwood was built in 1807 as a stagecoach stop on the road from Albany to Buffalo. The two-storey clapboard verandah looking down to the lake has been the most prominent porch in the village for two centuries — Theodore Roosevelt is supposed to have stopped here, and Bill and Hillary Clinton spent a holiday weekend at the inn in 1999.
