Emerald Isle

Family-oriented Crystal Coast beach town on the western end of Bogue Banks.

Emerald Isle is a low-key beach town at the western end of Bogue Banks, part of North Carolina's Crystal Coast. It is not a town of grand monuments or dense old streets. Its appeal is simpler: long Atlantic beach, Bogue Sound marshes, a fishing pier, and enough room to spend the day outside.

This is still a resort strip, so the bar should be honest. If you want museums, architecture, or nightlife, go elsewhere on the coast. If you want to walk to The Point, fish from Bogue Inlet Pier, bike the island path, or slip into Emerald Isle Woods Park for a soundside change of scene, it earns a spare day.

The town is best in the shoulder seasons, when the beach is still usable but the rental-house traffic has thinned. Summer works if you are here for family beach time and do not expect solitude.

Things to Do

Emerald Isle's attractions are mostly open-air and informal. The beach is the spine of the visit, but the western point, the pier, and the soundside woods give it more shape than a generic row of rental houses.

Bring a bike if you can. The island is flat, and moving slowly between ocean, pier, and sound is a better fit than driving from parking lot to parking lot.
