Salisbury Station

Salisbury's restored 1908 Spanish Mission Revival train station, still in daily use

Salisbury Station is the town's working Amtrak depot — three daily trains stop here on the New York–Charlotte–New Orleans corridor — and one of its handsomest buildings. Designed in Spanish Mission Revival style and opened in 1908 by the Southern Railway, the long red-tile-roofed station was carefully restored in the 1990s and now houses a small museum, a model railroad in the basement, and the working ticket counter.

The station's setting is part of its charm: it sits across from a freight yard that is still in daily use, and you can usually watch a long Norfolk Southern coal or container train rumble through while you wait. The volunteer-run rail museum is open weekend afternoons.
