Oologah

Small Oklahoma town tied to Will Rogers's birthplace, anchored by his restored ranch.

Oologah is a small town in northeast Oklahoma, best known as the birthplace of Will Rogers — humorist, actor, and one of the most beloved Americans of the early twentieth century. The Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch sits just west of town: a beautifully restored Greek Revival house, working longhorn ranch, and museum covering his life from Cherokee Nation cowboy to Hollywood star and newspaper columnist.

The town also sits on the shore of Oologah Lake, a 29,500-acre reservoir on the Verdigris River popular with anglers and boaters. The Oologah Historical Museum in town covers local history from the Cherokee Nation era through statehood. And somewhere north of town on Winganon Road, a concrete mixing drum has been transformed into the Winganon Space Capsule — one of those roadside Oklahoma surprises that makes no sense and is completely irresistible.

It is quiet, unhurried, and very Oklahoman.

Getting There

Oologah is about 50 kilometres northeast of Tulsa on US-169. From Tulsa International Airport, take US-75 North and then head east on OK-88 — the drive takes around 45 minutes. There is no public transport to speak of; a car is essential.

The Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore, the more comprehensive of the two Rogers sites, is about 20 kilometres south and makes a natural companion stop.
