Joseph is the small town at the end of Oregon Highway 82, where ranch country runs into the Wallowa Mountains and the road bends toward Wallowa Lake State Park. It is not big, and it does not pretend to be. Main Street has bronze sculptures, galleries, old storefronts, and a view south to peaks that look too sharp and alpine for eastern Oregon.
The town is named for Chief Joseph, and the surrounding valley is central to the story of the Nez Perce. Old Chief Joseph Gravesite and Iwetemlaykin State Heritage Site make that history part of a visit rather than background decoration. The Wallowa County Museum adds local context, from Native life to ranching and settlement.
Joseph clears a spare day easily if you are anywhere near La Grande, Enterprise, or Hells Canyon. Ride the Wallowa Lake Tramway to Mount Howard for the big view, walk the lake shore, then return to town for the art walk. It is a gateway, but not only a gateway.
