Newberg

Willamette Valley wine town with Quaker roots, a Hoover house, and river history nearby.

Newberg sits at the north end of Oregon's Willamette Valley wine country, close enough to Portland for an easy day trip but with its own small-town rhythm. It is a Quaker-founded college town, a practical base for tasting rooms and vineyard roads, and one of the few places in the Pacific Northwest with a presidential house museum.

The town's strongest sight is the Hoover-Minthorn House, where Herbert Hoover lived as a boy after being orphaned. Downtown Newberg is modest but walkable, with old brick storefronts, cafes, and tasting rooms that feel less polished than the more famous wine towns farther south.

The surrounding country matters as much as the town. Champoeg State Heritage Area, just down the Willamette River, marks a key early Oregon political site and gives Newberg a stronger historical anchor than its "gateway to wine country" label suggests. Come for a slow day of history, river air, and a couple of glasses of pinot noir rather than a checklist of big-city attractions.
