Multnomah Whiskey Library

Multnomah Whiskey Library on SW Alder Street is one of the finest whiskey bars in the United States, stocking over 1,500 whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, Japan, Kentucky, Tennessee, and smaller producers worldwide. The bar is two floors in a converted historic building, with floor-to-ceiling shelves of bottles in the main room, a library ladder system for accessing the upper shelves, and attentive bartenders who take their selections seriously.

Non-members can visit without reservation, though the bar is often full. The cocktail programme is well developed beyond whiskey; the food menu is limited but competent. The pricing is appropriate for the quality — this is not a cheap drink. The bar is on SW Alder between Park and 9th, a short walk from Pioneer Courthouse Square. Closed Sundays.

A story
The Multnomah Whiskey Library was opened in 2013 with a membership model — a limited number of founding memberships that gave priority access and a reserved table. The concept generated such demand that the waiting list grew to several thousand names within months of opening, and the bar became a source of civic pride as evidence that Portland could sustain a world-class bar programme. By 2014, non-members could visit on weekday afternoons and evenings.
