Stumptown Coffee

Stumptown Coffee Roasters began Portland's reputation as a serious coffee city and remains one of the most respected names in US specialty coffee. The original location on SW 3rd Avenue in downtown is a reliable stop for espresso and pour-overs; the Ace Hotel location on SW Stark is the café most associated with the brand's aesthetic — stripped-back, serious about coffee, not precious about it.

Stumptown pioneered direct-trade sourcing of green coffee from Ethiopia, Colombia, and Sumatra among other origins, and still publishes information on the farms and communities behind its single-origin offerings. Hair Bender espresso is available throughout the day. The downtown location is open daily; the Ace Hotel café operates from morning until late afternoon.

A story
Stumptown Coffee Roasters was founded in Portland in 1999 by Duane Sorenson and was among the first US roasters to pay substantial premiums to coffee farmers for high-quality beans — a model that became standard in what the industry now calls third-wave coffee. Stumptown's Hair Bender blend became one of the best-known espresso blends in American specialty coffee. The company grew quickly, opened in New York and Seattle, and was eventually acquired by Peet's Coffee in 2015, though it maintains its roasting operations and profile.
