Warwick

Suburban Narragansett Bay city with coves, beaches, old villages, and Rhode Island's main airport.

Warwick is not as showy as Providence or Newport, but it has a very Rhode Island mix of shoreline, old villages, coves, and practical usefulness. The state's main airport is here, and so are several quiet pieces of Narragansett Bay that locals use more than visitors do.

The city spreads along Greenwich Bay and the west side of Narragansett Bay, so it feels less like one centre than a chain of neighbourhoods. Oakland Beach is the easy summer stop, Rocky Point State Park gives you the best walk along the water, and Apponaug keeps a little of the old village texture behind the traffic.

Warwick works best as a gentle add-on to a Rhode Island trip: a seafood lunch by the bay, a lighthouse view from Warwick Neck, or a last walk before a flight out of T. F. Green. It is not a place to overplan, but it rewards travellers who like the quieter edges of coastal New England.
