Eating Out

Charleston is one of the best food cities in the American South. Lowcountry cooking draws on the rice-and-seafood traditions of the Sea Islands, and the classics to look for are shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, fried green tomatoes, hoppin' John (rice and black-eyed peas), and anything involving boiled peanuts or sweet tea. A generation of ambitious young chefs — led by Sean Brock at Husk — has brought the city serious national attention; FIG, Husk and The Ordinary are among the places worth booking ahead. For something quicker, head to the food stalls in the City Market or the long-running Hominy Grill for breakfast.
