International African American Museum

Powerful museum on the site where enslaved Africans arrived

Address 14 Wharfside St

Opened in 2023 on the site of Gadsden's Wharf, where nearly half of all enslaved Africans brought to North America first stepped ashore. The museum builds the history of African Americans from West African origins through slavery, Gullah-Geechee culture, the civil rights movement and the present day, and is one of the most important new museums in the country. The waterfront tidal memorial outside is a profoundly moving space.
