Pampa sits in the open ranch country of the Texas Panhandle, about an hour northeast of Amarillo. It is not a polished tourist town, and that is part of the point: the grain elevators, oil-field roads, and wind-scoured streets feel very much like the High Plains.
The town's best reason to stop is its local history. The White Deer Land Museum tells the story of the ranching company that helped shape Gray County, while the Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center remembers the years when Guthrie lived here and began becoming a musician. The smaller Freedom Museum USA adds a World War II air-base story that is easy to miss from the highway.
Pampa is best as a deliberate Panhandle detour rather than a long stay. Come during the Top o' Texas Rodeo if you can, or pair the town with a slow drive through the Canadian River breaks and the ranching country north of I-40.
