Maysville

Ohio River town with frontier history, preserved downtown blocks, and bourbon-country edges.

Maysville is a small Kentucky river town with more texture than its size suggests. It sits on the Ohio River northeast of Lexington, facing Aberdeen, Ohio, and its brick downtown still reads as a 19th-century port rather than a generic highway stop.

The appeal is history at walking speed. The riverfront, the Simon Kenton Memorial Bridge, the restored Russell Theatre, and the local museums give Maysville a compact sense of place. The National Underground Railroad Museum is the serious stop; it connects the town's Ohio River setting to the lives of people escaping slavery.

Old Washington, now part of Maysville, adds an earlier frontier layer a few miles inland. Bourbon is part of the story too: Old Pogue Distillery keeps the local whiskey tradition alive on a hill above town. Maysville is not a big destination, but if you are travelling through northern Kentucky or following the Ohio River, it is worth the detour.
