Observation Point

700-metre climb to a viewpoint above Angels Landing

Observation Point sits 200 metres higher than Angels Landing and looks straight down on it. The traditional approach was a long, steep eight-mile hike from the canyon floor at Weeping Rock — but a series of rockfalls have closed that trail indefinitely. The currently open route is a back-door approach from the East Rim via the East Mesa Trailhead, off Highway 9 outside the park: a much gentler seven-mile round trip across the plateau, with the dizzying view as a reward.

You will need a car or an outfitter shuttle to reach the trailhead, which is rough gravel road. Plan for four or five hours and bring a lot of water. The view at the end is arguably the best in Zion: the whole canyon spread out below, the Virgin River a thread of green, and the cars on the road like ants.
