Waitsfield

Mad River Valley village of covered bridges, swimming holes, artists, and Route 100 scenery.

Waitsfield sits in the Mad River Valley on Vermont Route 100, the road many visitors use when they want Vermont to look like Vermont. The village is small, but it has a strong valley identity: covered bridges, old farm fields, river swimming, local art, ski traffic in winter, and mountain views that explain why people linger here.

The best first stop is the Great Eddy Covered Bridge, just off the village centre. From there you can follow the river mood south to Lareau Swim Hole, browse Vermont-made work at Artisans' Gallery, or time a Saturday visit for the Waitsfield Farmers Market.

Waitsfield is not a big sightseeing town. Its appeal is slower and more local: a morning market, a cold swim, a covered bridge photograph, a gallery stop, and dinner somewhere in the valley. If you are already in central Vermont, that is enough for a good day.

Shopping

Shopping in Waitsfield is small-scale and local. The farmers market and art galleries are the useful stops, not chain retail or souvenir rows.

Things to Do

Waitsfield's sights are tied to the Mad River and the village's creative, rural character. Come in summer for swimming and farmers market Saturdays, in autumn for foliage, and in winter if the Mad River Valley ski areas are part of the trip.
