Capitol Market

Year-round farmers' market in a converted freight depot

The Capitol Market is the most enjoyable single stop in central Charleston: a year-round indoor farmers' market in a long brick freight depot at the foot of Capitol Street, with permanent vendors selling cheese, baked goods, coffee, fish, prepared foods, flowers, and West Virginia honey and maple syrup. In summer, an outdoor section opens for produce stalls from valley growers.

A handful of small restaurants — Soho's for casual lunches, the Bricks for steaks at dinner — are built into the market shell. A good place for a slow lunch before heading back to the Capitol grounds.

A story
The site was the old Pennsylvania Railroad freight depot serving the chemical plants along the Kanawha. After freight rail declined in the 1990s the city converted the long brick shed into a year-round market in 1999 — a project that helped pull retail back toward the rail-served edge of downtown.
