The Town Center Mall, unusually for an American capital, sits at the heart of downtown and includes the standard mid-market anchor stores. For the famous Capitol Market — a former rail freight depot converted into a covered farmers' and produce market — head to Smith Street; it is one of the most enjoyable shopping stops in the city.
