Charleston's main draws are compact. The Capitol Complex anchors the east edge of downtown, with the state history museum, the Governor's Mansion and the wider grounds all worth an hour or two. Downtown itself rewards a walk for its surviving early-20th-century commercial architecture, the Clay Center for arts and science, and the riverside Haddad Park. The East End neighbourhood across the river offers the best preserved residential streetscapes, and Kanawha State Forest is the urban-edge escape for hiking and swimming.
