Downtown Historic District

Early-20th-century commercial core around Capitol Street

Charleston's Downtown Historic District — listed on the National Register since 2002 — covers about ten blocks around Capitol Street, the city's main commercial spine. The buildings are largely turn-of-the-twentieth-century: cast-iron department-store fronts, Romanesque revival office blocks, and a row of early movie theatres in various states of restoration.

Walk down Capitol Street from Washington Street to the Boulevard for the best concentration of architecture, including the Daniel Boone Hotel, the United Carbon Building (now Boulevard Tower), and the Loewenstein Hardware Building. Several blocks were rebuilt after the 1990s redevelopment, but enough has survived to give a real sense of mid-century Charleston.
