Yeager Airport

Charleston's hilltop airport, named after the test pilot

Yeager Airport (CRW) sits on a flattened hilltop about three miles north-east of downtown Charleston — its short, plateau-edge runways are famous among pilots for the unusual approaches required. Daily commercial flights connect Charleston with Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Washington (Dulles), Houston, and a handful of other Eastern hubs.

A taxi to downtown takes about 10 minutes and costs around $20–25; Uber and Lyft both serve the airport. There is no public bus.

A story
The airport was built in 1947 by levelling the tops of three mountains and using 9 million cubic yards of fill — one of the largest earth-moving projects in the eastern United States. It was renamed in 1985 for Chuck Yeager, the West Virginia native who broke the sound barrier in 1947.
