Sutton

Tiny central West Virginia county seat with lake recreation, Civil War history, and Flatwoods Monster lore.

Sutton is a small Braxton County town just off I-79 in central West Virginia. It can look like a highway stop at first glance, but the old courthouse town, nearby lake, Civil War ground, and local UFO legend give it enough odd texture for a spare day.

Start in the Sutton Downtown Historic District, where brick storefronts and county buildings still hold the main street together. Around the corner, the Flatwoods Monster Museum turns one of West Virginia's strangest 1950s stories into a small but memorable stop.

The outdoor reason to come is Sutton Lake, an Elk River reservoir with boating, fishing, and wooded coves just outside town. If you are interested in Civil War history, Bulltown Historic Area adds preserved earthworks and a battlefield trail a short drive away. Sutton is not polished, but it rewards travelers who like Appalachian county seats with a few unusual stories attached.

Getting There

Sutton sits on I-79 and US-19, about halfway between Charleston and the Clarksburg-Fairmont area. Driving is the normal way to arrive and the only practical way to link the town, lake, and nearby historic sites in one day.
