Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral is the principal church of the Diocese of Green Bay, a Gothic Revival structure built in 1851 and expanded several times since. The building sits prominently in the downtown area and serves as a reminder that Green Bay's Catholic heritage predates its football fame by several centuries — Jesuit missionaries were working among the Menominee and Ho-Chunk peoples of Green Bay in the 1670s, making this one of the oldest Catholic communities in Wisconsin.
The interior has good stained glass and a sense of accumulated devotion that newer churches rarely achieve. It is open to visitors outside of service times and worth a brief stop when walking through downtown.
