A compact grid of brick and stone commercial buildings put up between 1900 and 1940 during the first big Salt Creek oil boom. The district extends from Center Street to Wolcott, with the Townsend Hotel, the old Wyoming National Bank, and a clutch of art-deco facades as the highlights.
It's a pleasant half-hour walk on a fine afternoon. The streetscape has held up partly because Casper never quite boomed again — there was no money for tear-downs in the 1980s and 1990s, which preserved a lot of detail. Several of the buildings now house cafés and breweries, making for sensible coffee or beer stops along the way.
