Hilltop museum dedicated to the Oregon, Mormon, California, and Pony Express trails

A federally run museum perched on a bluff above the North Platte, dedicated to the great westward migrations of the 19th century. The exhibits are unusually well-mounted for a regional museum: mock wagon crossings of the Platte (you sit in a covered wagon while the floor rocks), Pony Express recreations, Native American perspectives on the migrations, and a thoughtful section on disease and death on the trail.

Allow ninety minutes to two hours. Free; the bluff itself gives a fine view across the river valley toward town. Closed Sunday and Monday in winter.

A story
Casper sat at a chokepoint on all four of the great western emigrant trails — the Oregon, Mormon, California, and Pony Express. The most reliable river crossing of the North Platte was here, and in 1847 Brigham Young's Mormon pioneer company ran a ferry on the site to earn cash from passing emigrants.
