Holliday Park (Big Boy 4004)

Holliday Park, on the east side of town, contains one of the last surviving Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotives — number 4004, retired in 1962 and parked here as a memorial in 1963. It is a magnificent and mostly unguarded thing — you can walk straight up to the wheels, taller than a person, and read the maker's plate on the side. The cab is locked but a ladder lets you peer in.

The rest of the park is a flat, lake-sided municipal green space with a children's playground and the city's main outdoor pool. A short drive or 30-minute walk east of downtown. Free; always open.

A story
Big Boy 4004 was the largest steam locomotive ever built — 132 feet long, 350 tonnes, capable of hauling 3,600 tonnes of freight over the Wyoming pass at Sherman Hill. Only 25 were ever built, all by ALCO between 1941 and 1944. Number 4014, restored to running condition by the Union Pacific in 2019, is now the only operational Big Boy in the world; this 4004 still sits permanently on its display track in Cheyenne.
