Cerro Catedral

South America's largest ski resort, 19 km west of town

Cerro Catedral is the largest ski resort in South America and the centre of Bariloche's winter economy. The lift system reaches 2,180 metres and serves over 100 kilometres of runs across the southern face of the mountain. The season runs from mid-June to early October. Snowfall is reliable but the resort sits relatively low, so warm spells can take out the lower runs in spring.

In summer the lifts run for hikers and mountain bikers, with downhill bike trails and viewing platforms at the top stations. The walk along the ridge to Refugio Frey, a Club Andino mountain hut on a hanging cirque lake, is one of the classic day hikes from the resort. The peak itself, a jagged crown of dark rock, gave the mountain its name.

A story
The peak is named for its skyline of jagged rock spires that resemble a Gothic cathedral. In June 1971 the resort hosted the inaugural South American Skiing Championships, putting Bariloche on the international winter sports map.
