Isla Victoria and Arrayanes Forest

Catamaran day trip to forested island and rare myrtle wood

The classic Bariloche boat trip leaves from Puerto Pañuelo at the foot of the Llao Llao peninsula. The catamarans cross Nahuel Huapi to Isla Victoria, a forested island that has been a national park forest research station since the 1920s. Trails climb to a viewpoint with views down to the bays and back to the snow on Tronador.

The second stop is the Bosque de Arrayanes at the tip of the Quetrihué peninsula in adjacent Los Arrayanes National Park. The myrtle trees here, with their characteristic cinnamon-coloured peeling bark, grow nowhere else as a pure forest. Walt Disney visited in the 1940s and the place is — without much evidence — said to have inspired the forest in Bambi. A boardwalk loops through the most spectacular grove.
