Llao Llao Hotel

Iconic 1930s hotel on a peninsula between two lakes

The Llao Llao Hotel is one of the great Andean hotels, set on a forested peninsula 25 kilometres west of Bariloche with Lago Nahuel Huapi on one side and Lago Moreno on the other. Architect Alejandro Bustillo designed the building in 1938 — the same architect responsible for the Civic Centre — taking inspiration from Canadian railway hotels and Swiss Alpine lodges. The grey stone, steep red roofs, and forest setting make it the visual signature of the region.

Non-guests can still walk the surrounding park trails for free, drop in for afternoon tea on the lakeside terrace, or take the chocolate-and-coffee tour through the lobby and ballroom. The 18-hole golf course around the hotel is open to the public and has one of the most spectacular settings of any course in South America.

A story
The original hotel, built in 1938 mostly of cypress wood, burned to the ground three days after opening. The replacement, completed in 1940 with stone and slate, has hosted Eisenhower, the Shah of Iran, and Barack Obama. It is on every Argentine peso 100 banknote that was withdrawn in 2017.
