Feira Hippie

The Feira Hippie is one of the largest outdoor markets in South America, held every Sunday in the central streets around the Praça do Trabalhador. What began in the 1970s as a countercultural craft market has expanded into a sprawling grid of stalls covering several city blocks, selling clothes, leather goods, jewellery, ceramics, regional craft items, electronics, and food. On a busy Sunday, tens of thousands of people pass through.

The market is best approached in the morning, before the heat and the crowds make navigation difficult. The food section, where vendors grill meats and serve cold drinks from coolers, is the natural stopping point midway through. The craft stalls at the periphery are where the more interesting regional work tends to end up — small-scale potters and woodcarvers from the interior of Goiás selling directly. Despite its size, the market retains an easy, social atmosphere, and spending a Sunday morning here is one of the more enjoyable things to do in Goiânia.
