Goiânia rewards visitors who look past the business-district surface. The city has a striking Art Deco centre, a network of urban parks that are unusually good for a Brazilian city of this size, and a music and nightlife scene that is entirely its own. The radioactive accident of 1987 left its mark on the city's history and deserves to be understood — not avoided.
