Church of São Pedro dos Clérigos

18th-century rococo church on the Terreiro de Jesus

The third of the churches that face the Terreiro de Jesus, smaller and quieter than the Cathedral or São Francisco. Built between 1709 and 1746 by the Brotherhood of Clergymen of St Peter, the church is mainly visited for its rococo gilded altarpieces — less overwhelming than São Francisco's but with finer detail in the side chapels.

Often empty when the surrounding churches are crowded, which makes it the easiest place in the Pelourinho to sit for ten minutes and study a baroque interior without being moved on.
