The Terreiro de Jesus is the central square of the Pelourinho — a flat-paved plaza overlooked by the Cathedral, the church of São Pedro dos Clérigos, and the convent of São Domingos. It is also the routine gathering point for capoeira circles, which form most afternoons around the fountain.
It is the easiest place in the city to watch capoeira played at high level: two players inside the circle, the rest playing berimbau, atabaque drums, and singing. Tipping the players is expected. The square is also where most of the Pelourinho's walking tours begin.
