Igreja de São Salvador

Small parish church on the Sé square

A small parish church on the Praça da Sé, the southern end of the Pelourinho. The square itself is the busiest entry point to the historic centre for tour groups, with the cathedral, the bus drop-offs, and the start of most walking tours.

The square is also the site of an ongoing archaeological dig that has exposed the foundations of the original Cathedral of Salvador, demolished in 1933 to widen the road — a controversy still debated locally. The interpretive panels are worth ten minutes.
