Bar do Armando, just behind the Teatro Amazonas, has been a Manaus institution since the 1980s — the place journalists, writers, theatre crowds and curious tourists all end up at some point in the evening. The bar spills out onto the pavement under simple white awnings; the menu is petiscos and very cold beer; the wall is covered in framed photographs of the regulars over the years.
It is not fancy, and the food is functional rather than memorable, but the atmosphere on a busy evening is hard to beat. After a show at the Teatro it is the natural place to head. Closed Sundays.
