The Minhocao is a 2.7-km elevated highway through central Sao Paulo, notorious as a monument to the city's hard-edged 1970s planning. Seen from below it is heavy and disruptive; seen from above, when traffic is closed, it becomes an unusual urban promenade.
Cars are kept off the road at night and on Sundays, when walkers and cyclists use it for views over Santa Cecilia and the western edge of the centre. It is not pretty in a conventional way, but it is one of the clearest places to understand Sao Paulo's scale, contradictions, and street art.
