Largo da Ordem & the Historic Centre

Largo da Ordem is the historic heart of Curitiba, a cobbled square and surrounding streets that preserve the scale and character of the 18th and 19th-century city. The Cathedral Basilica Nossa Senhora da Luz, originally built in 1693 and rebuilt in the 19th century in a Gothic-revival style, presides over the square. The street of Rua das Flores, pedestrianised and lined with historic buildings, runs south from here into the main shopping area.

The neighbourhood around the Largo — particularly along Rua Claudino dos Santos and toward the Solar do Barão cultural centre — contains small galleries, independent cafes, and the Museu Paranaense, the state's main historical museum. The Sunday market brings all of this to life in the best possible way: street food, local produce, antiques, and live music from around 9am to 2pm.

A story
On Sunday mornings Largo da Ordem transforms into a large antiques and craft fair, the Feira do Largo da Ordem. It has been running since 1970 and draws thousands of curitibanos as well as visitors. The food stalls selling barreado (a slow-cooked beef dish that is Paraná's signature) and the craft tables with local woodwork and ceramics make it one of the best markets in southern Brazil.
