The Serra Verde Express to Paranaguá

Spectacular mountain train descending through Atlantic Forest to the coast

The Serra Verde Express is one of Brazil's great scenic train rides, descending from Curitiba at 900 metres through the Serra do Mar mountains to the colonial port of Paranaguá at sea level. The line passes through Atlantic Forest, over viaducts, and through tunnels, with views of waterfalls and deep valleys. The journey takes about three hours. The train does not run every day and schedules vary by season — check ahead. From Paranaguá you can return by train, take the bus (which follows an equally dramatic road), or continue to the coast.
