Parque Tingui & the Ukrainian Memorial

Parque Tingui, in the northern part of the city, is a large park built along the banks of the Barigui river. Its centrepiece is the Ukrainian Memorial — a full-scale replica of a Ukrainian Orthodox church, with a distinctive blue onion dome, surrounded by an ornamental garden and a small monument to Ukrainian immigrant history.

The park is pleasant to walk through regardless of your interest in Ukrainian heritage: the river path, the eucalyptus-shaded picnic areas, and the Ópera de Arame concert venue all sit within the park boundaries. On weekends it fills with families, cyclists, and joggers. The combination of cultural memorial and natural space is characteristic of how Curitiba treats its immigrant heritage — not hidden in a museum, but embedded in the city's parks and everyday life.

A story
The Parque Tingui Ukrainian Memorial was inaugurated in 1995, a century after the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants arrived in Paraná. Curitiba has one of the largest Ukrainian communities in Brazil — an estimated 400,000 people of Ukrainian descent live in Paraná state — and the memorial reflects a cultural presence that goes back five generations. The church's painted interior is one of the most detailed examples of Ukrainian ecclesiastical art in the western hemisphere.
