The island has over a hundred beaches with quite different characters. The northern beaches — Canasvieiras, Jurerê, and Daniela — have calm water and family-friendly facilities, and fill up with Argentine tourists in summer. The eastern coast has the surf beaches: Praia Mole is the most consistent for waves, Joaquina is well-known from Brazilian surfing championships, and Barra da Lagoa is more laid-back with a fishing village nearby. Praia da Galheta is the island's nude beach and a gay-friendly spot. In the south, Campeche has dramatic waves but is unsafe for swimming. Lagoinha do Leste, accessible only by trail, is one of the most beautiful and least crowded beaches on the island.
