Day Trips

Ilha do Campeche — a protected island a short boat ride from Praia da Armação, with crystal-clear water, good snorkelling, and a set of prehistoric rock carvings (petroglifos) carved into the island's boulders. Boats run from Armação in the morning; numbers are limited to protect the island. One of the best short excursions from Florianópolis.

Santo Amaro da Imperatriz — 30 km inland along the Tijucas river valley, this small town is known for its hot springs and spa resorts. A popular escape from the beach heat, especially for families. The drive through the Serra Geral foothills is scenic.

Garopaba and Imbituba — 60 to 80 km south along the coast, these quieter beach towns are less built-up than Florianópolis and popular with surfers. The stretch of coast between them is one of the best places in Brazil to see southern right whales, which come to calve from June to November. Whale-watching boat trips run from both towns during the season.

Blumenau — 140 km north, this city founded by German immigrants in the 19th century has a distinct Bavarian character — the architecture, the food, and the local dialect all reflect it. The Oktoberfest here, held every October, is one of the largest outside Germany. Worth combining with a visit to the smaller, more authentic German-speaking town of Pomerode nearby.
