Parque Santander

The central plaza of Bucaramanga, Parque Santander sits in front of the city's modern cathedral and serves as the de facto living room of downtown. Vendors sell hormigas culonas (roasted leafcutter ants) from small stalls around the perimeter — this is the easiest place in the city to try them. The plaza is lively from morning to night, with shoeshine stands, lottery ticket sellers, and pigeons competing for the same patches of pavement. The Cathedral of the Holy Family facing the park was completed in the twentieth century and is large rather than beautiful, but worth a look inside for the scale of it.
