Iglesia de Santa Barbara is one of Tunja's colonial churches, completed at the end of the sixteenth century and still woven into the old city's religious life. Its scale is modest, but the interior holds the kind of carved and painted detail that makes Tunja rewarding for travellers who like colonial architecture.
Visit it as part of a circuit through the historic centre rather than in isolation. The church adds another layer to Tunja's unusually dense collection of old religious buildings, and its quieter atmosphere can be a relief after the main plaza.
