Capilla y Museo de Santa Clara La Real

16th-century convent with baroque chapel and colonial paintings

The first convent established in the New Kingdom of Granada, founded in 1571 by Poor Clares nuns. The single-naved chapel is a remarkable blend of baroque, Mudejar, and indigenous decorative styles, its walls densely covered in colonial-era paintings spanning three centuries. The museum section includes the preserved cell of Madre Francisca Josefa de la Concepción, a mystic nun who lived here for 53 years (1689–1742) and is considered a candidate for sainthood.

The guided tour tells Madre Josefa's full story — the mystical visions, the writings, the self-mortification — and is genuinely compelling even if you're not particularly religious. One of Tunja's most rewarding stops.
