The Guayaquil Municipal Museum (Museo Municipal) occupies one of the city's finest neoclassical buildings, adjacent to the Municipal Library. The collection covers Ecuadorian art and pre-Columbian archaeology, with a good representation of coastal cultures and an Egyptian mummy that has been here since the 19th century — an unexpected acquisition that has remained ever since.
The museum is free to enter and one of the better ways to spend an hour or two in the city centre. The building itself is worth seeing for its neoclassical facade, which dates from the early 20th century and survived the fires and earthquakes that have periodically reshaped Guayaquil's historic centre.
