Sinnamary

Small Creole river town on French Guiana's coast, used for pirogue trips into the interior.

Sinnamary is a small Creole town of around 3,000 people on the coast between Kourou and Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. Unlike its neighbor Kourou, shaped by the space industry, Sinnamary has kept its quiet creole character — wooden houses along the river, a modest market, and a relaxed pace that coastal French Guiana doesn't always offer.

The town sits at the mouth of the Sinnamary River and is a good base for river excursions. Pirogue trips can be arranged to upriver destinations including Saut Caouanne, Saut Tigre, Takari, and the dramatic Saut Lucifer. Trips along the Grégoire Creek are another option. Local boatmen can be hired at the riverfront.

Outside town on the road toward the CSG (Guiana Space Centre), the Hôtel du Fleuve occupies a fine position on the river and is considered one of the better-situated guesthouses in French Guiana.
