Soyo

Northern Angolan city where the Congo River meets the Atlantic, dominated by the Kwanda oil base.

Small city in the far north of Angola, in Zaire province, where the Congo River meets the Atlantic Ocean. You can reach Soyo by plane on TAAG or by car from Luanda — the first stretch to Caxito is paved, but the remaining stretch north is unpaved and rough. It is an adventure either way.

The city is dominated by the Kwanda oil base. There is one small hotel and some guesthouses, running around $100 per night as is typical for Angola. Electricity and water are not guaranteed. One acceptable restaurant and that is about it. Soyo is a working town, not a tourist destination — but the Congo River estuary has a wild, remote beauty that justifies the effort of getting here. The sheer scale of the river mouth — one of the widest in Africa — is something you don't forget.
