Gaborone Game Reserve

The Gaborone Game Reserve is a 600-hectare wildlife area within the city limits, making it one of the more accessible quick wildlife experiences of any African capital. The reserve supports populations of impala, wildebeest, eland, zebra, and various smaller antelope, along with warthog and a range of birdlife.

Game drives are available and the reserve has picnic areas. It lacks the big predators and large herds you find in Botswana's national parks, but for a half-day excursion it's genuinely pleasant — and the contrast between the animals and the urban skyline is distinctively Gaborone. The reserve is managed by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

A story
The reserve sits within the city limits — an unusual arrangement that means impala and warthog wander through patches of bush while apartment blocks are visible on the horizon. It was established in the early years of independence partly as a statement of intent: that wildlife and urbanisation could coexist in Botswana's capital.
