Mokolodi Nature Reserve

Mokolodi Nature Reserve lies 10 kilometres south of central Gaborone and offers the best wildlife experience within easy reach of the capital. The reserve covers 30 square kilometres and is run by the not-for-profit Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation, established in 1994.

The wildlife roster includes giraffe, zebra, southern white rhinoceros, leopard, and hippo, along with a reptile park housing some of Africa's most dangerous snakes — black mamba, spitting cobra, and puff adder. Rescued vultures occupy large enclosures in the aviary section. Cheetah and African wild dogs are kept in separate enclosed areas. Guided game drives and bush walks are the standard way to see the reserve; rhino tracking on foot is a highlight for those willing to pay the supplement.

A story
Mokolodi is home to one of Botswana's most important white rhinoceros breeding programmes. Southern white rhinos were once extinct in Botswana — the animals here are descended from populations reintroduced from South Africa, and the foundation's breeding work contributes to the national recovery effort. Guided rhino tracking on foot is available and puts you at close quarters with animals that weigh more than a car.
