Bafut Palace

The most accessible and impressive of the Grassfields chiefdom palaces, in the village of Bafut about 15 km north of Bamenda. The Achum — the sacred central building — is a tall conical thatched structure with carved wooden posts. A small museum displays masks, ivory horns, traditional weapons, and historical photographs of the British colonial period.

The Fon of Bafut still lives in the compound and has accommodated visitors since the 1940s. Visits are by guided tour through the Bafut tourist office; a contribution to the palace is customary.

A story
The British colonial administrator Gerald Durrell stayed at the Bafut palace several times in the 1940s and 1950s, collecting animals for European zoos. He turned the experience into 'The Bafut Beagles' — a wry and affectionate book that put the chiefdom on the European literary map.
